Private Pilot's License

Almost all pilots in the United States earn a traditional private pilot certificate. It’s what most people think of when we say that someone has their “private.” It has the fewest limitations and, with additional training, can be upgraded to include more advanced capabilities such as flying in bad weather, flying an airplane with two or more engines, or flying professionally.

To become a private pilot you must be a least 17 years old (you can start at any age). To take your checkride you need to have at least 40 hours of flight time (the actual average is closer to 70 hours*), including 20 hours of instruction and 10 hours of solo flight. A private pilot--with appropriate training may carry passengers in any aircraft, day or night. With an added Instrument Rating, private pilots are able to fly in a much wider range of weather conditions.

Private Pilot students must:

Pass a third-class aviation medical exam
Pass a written exam
Pass a flying checkride

The estimated costs are $9,900*

Flyers have a sense of adventures yet to come, instead of dimly recalling adventures of long ago as the only moments in which they truly lived. — Richard Bach, 'A Gift of Wings,' 1974.
